Obituary of Edward Anthony Galvin

Edward Anthony Galvin passed away at home late on Christmas Day. Edward Galvin was born on January 10, 1913 in Richmond California to William and Gertrude Galvin. He was a graduate of the University of Southern California in Petroleum Engineering. In 1954, the Galvin family came to Calgary where Ed had a one year contract with Gulf Oil. This was the start of a fifty-year career in the Canadian Oil and Gas industry where he became known as a mentor to entrepreneurs and a builder of strong companies. He retired from Norcen as the company’s President in 1978, and founded Poco Petroleums, assisted by Margaret Hunter. He then Chaired the privately owned Medpath Oil and Gas Ltd. Ed was a founding member of the Independent Petroleum Association of Canada, which honoured him with a lifetime membership as had the Canadian Petroleum Association, which he served as a Director and Chairman. The Association of Professional Engineers Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta also gave him a lifetime membership. In 1988, he earned the Paul Harris International Fellowship award from the Rotary Club, an award that recognizes those people who demonstrate a significant concern for others and who make substantial contributions to the community. Ed worked on behalf of the United Way and the Calgary Foundation where he created a major community endowment in memory of his late wife Frances. American College Football and golf were two of his passions. Recently, he was made an Honorary Fellow at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. Edward spent Christmas with his daughter Nancy Peters, daughter-in-law Donna Galvin, as well his four granddaughters Elizabeth, Shannon, Jessica and Erin, and his grandson, Graham. With him as well were his six great grandchildren, Townsend and Britt Lloyd, Matthew and William Schneider, and James and Jonathan Bergmann. His extended family in California include Jim Bivens, Jean Galvin, and Audrey Allan, his dearest friend, who brought him much happiness. He will be held forever in the hearts of his family. Edward was predeceased by his wife Frances and his son Ed. Ed was a generous man who touched the lives of many people with his grace and sincerity and was held in great respect by all who knew him. His greatest joy was time spent with his family at home in both Calgary and California. The family will gather on the occasion of what would have been Edward’s ninety-second birthday on January 10th, 2005 at the Calgary Golf and Country Club at Noon and they would be pleased if his friends and those that knew him, would join them.
