Obituary of Arnold Harvey Cohen

Arnold Cohen passed away peacefully and suddenly with all his family beside him on December 5, 2004, three days after his 83rd birthday. He was born and raised in Calgary, and completed his education at the University of Washington, Seattle, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering in 1944. He returned to Calgary and after serving in the Canadian Army and Air Force during World War II, he married Frances (Franky) Goldenberg of Saskatoon. He followed in his father’s footsteps, owning and operating men’s and boy’s clothing stores in Calgary for many years. Sparky was a proud and active member of the Calgary Jewish Community and instilled these values in his family. He is survived by his wife Frances, his sister Doreen Abugov (Jack), his brother-in-law Irving Goldenberg (Evelyn), and his sister-in-law Tillie Taylor. He is also survived by his three children and their spouses, Deborah and Albert Krygier, Mitch Cohen and Susan Purcell, and Steve and Marla Cohen. His latter years were highlighted by his relationship with his grandchildren, Cory Krygier (Nicki), Kevin Krygier (Jeanna), Darin Krygier, and Sean Sutherland. He was predeceased by his parents Eddie and Mary Cohen. Sparky had a long and fulfilling retirement and enjoyed many hobbies and activities, including wood-working and working out at the Calgary Jewish Centre. The family wishes to thank Dr. Lam and the staff of the Intensive Care Unit at the Rockyview Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 6, 2004, at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, 1325 Glenmore Trail SW, Calgary, Alberta (Telephone: (403) 255-8688). Internment to follow.
