Obituary of Esther Sophia Huck

It is with deepest regret that we announce the passing of Esther Sophia Huck on Tuesday, October 26, 2004. Esther was born in Luseland, SK on November 27, 1916. She married her soul mate, Alexander Huck on July 17, 1935. With their young family they moved to Calgary in 1942. While raising their family, Esther was involved in catering, a seamstress business and operating a kindergarten. She then commenced her career as an educator with her expertise being in the Language Arts field. She began her teaching career in 1964 and after completing her B.A. in Education in 1972 at the U of C, she began working as a Teacher, Assistant Principal, Vice Principal and Language Arts Consultant. She believed every child had the right to literacy and that this would enhance and enrich their whole life. Many students and teachers benefited from her commitment and passion. After she retired in 1980 from the Calgary Board of Education she continued to be a life long Educator. Esther had a keen fashion sense and enjoyed her weekly visits to the beauty salon. She was a “multi-tasker” in the true sense of the word. Esther loved to discuss and debate politics, sew, create beautiful quilts, garden, play the piano, travel, host family barbecues and Christmas dinners, and was a dedicated member of the Congregation of St. Matthew’s United Church. To her family and friends she will always be remembered as a caring and determined woman who stood strong in her beliefs. Esther was a loving and devoted wife to Alex for sixty-seven years, who predeceased her in 2002; a mother to, Joan Dubauskas, Marilyn (Norman) Peters, Ron Huck and Sandra (Dean) Schmuland. Esther was very proud of her twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. They will all miss their “Nana.” She especially loved babies and with Alex at her side she will now be reunited with her infant daughter and great-grandson who predeceased her. Esther was also predeceased by her daughter-in-law Sharon and a son-in-law Kes. Funeral Services will be held at St. Matthew’s United Church (2039 – 26A Street S.W.) on Saturday, October 30, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Clinton M. Mooney officiating.
