Obituary of Kenneth John Smith

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Kenneth John Smith beloved husband and best friend of Wilma since 1947, on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at the age of 80 years. Ken served in the RCAF/RAF in WW II, holding certificates as a Pilot, Navigator and Flight Engineer. After the war he operated a specialty construction materials manufacturing company in Toronto as President from 1947 to 1983. Ken was a member of the National Research Council and was active on several construction materials committees of the Canadian General Standards Board and represented CGSB at meetings of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). These committees established performance standards and testing methods for materials manufactured in North America. During his business career he was mentor to many. Ken was a thirty year member of St. George’s Golf and Country Club, Toronto where he enjoyed golf, curling and bridge. He was an elder of the United Church for fifty years, also serving on many other church boards, stewardship and music committees and he participated in the choir. Ken was also an amateur radio operator and held call signs VE3GQV and VE6KJS. He was a twenty-seven year member and Past President of the Skywide Amateur Radio Club and past Editor of the Skyhook Amateur Radio newsletter in Toronto. Ken and Wilma moved to Calgary in 1999 and enjoyed an active life in a senior’s community. Ken served as President of the Resident’s Association. Besides his loving wife Wilma, Ken is survived by his son John of Toronto; his daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Jim of Calgary; three grandchildren, James and Emily Bell of Calgary, and Laura Smith of Toronto; as well as a sister Ruby Smith of Toronto. Ken was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Anna Smith; brother Herbert Smith and sister Myrtle Walker all of Toronto. A Memorial Service will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W.) on Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Judy Chapman officiating.
