Obituary of George A. Tosh

George A. Tosh of Calgary passed away peacefully at the Beverly Centre Lake Midnapore with his family present on Saturday, October 16, 2004 at the age of 89 years. George was born on December 30, 1914 in Okotoks to William Simpson and Isabella Lees Tosh. Raised in Okotoks, George began his working life as a Ranch Hand for farmers in the area, and worked for Margaret and Eugene Goettler off and on for seven years. He was an Outrider on the Goettler chuckwagon outfit that won the championship at the 1934 Calgary Stampede. In 1936, he began a long career in the Western Canadian Oilfields for Rand Oil and Royalite in the Turner Valley oilfield, starting as a Roughneck and working his way up to Drilling Supervisor. George was driller on Imperial’s Leduc #1 when it came in. He and his family made numerous moves working for Imperial Oil in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Northwest Territories. He retired from Imperial Oil in 1971 to begin a career as an Independent Oilfield Drilling Consultant and spend more time on his favourite pastimes – gardening and stream fishing. George is survived by his loving wife of sixty-seven years, Hazel; his sons, George (Joyce) and William (Beverley); his daughter Kay (Per) Hansen; as well as his grandchildren, Scott, Sean, Mikkel, Lara, and Evangeline. George was predeceased by his parents; a brother William (Scotty) Tosh; and three sisters, Jean Fox, Cora Renard and Mae Isabella (Pixie) Nolley.
