Obituary of Agnes Eleanor McKay Spirou

Agnes Eleanor McKay Spirou (nee Lowe) of Calgary, passed away at the Sarcee Long Term Care Center (Carewest) on Friday, October 1, 2004 at the age of 100 years. Agnes Eleanor McKay Spirou was born in Glen Craig, Fyfeshire, Scotland on January 31, 1904. She came to Lethbridge with her family in 1912. Agnes and her beloved Gus will be fondly remembered by many who grew up in the Elbow Park area and visited the Elbow View Confectionary from the early 1940’s to 1960’s to enjoy Gus’s “Dagwoods”, Agnes’s homemade pies, comic books, candies, and usually some very “sound” advice spiced with a marvelous sense of humor. Although Agnes was born in Scotland, she became fluent in the Greek language having cared for Gus’s parents, Nick and Tula. Gus retired in 1960 and moved from the Elbow Park area to Mount Royal where he enjoyed his garden and hopping on the bus to go downtown to “check the market”. Agnes enjoyed being at home and caring for her Gus. Gus died in 1983 and Agnes continued to make new friends with her neighbours, young and old in the Mount Royal district. Agnes was always interested in people and what made them “tick”. She passed this love onto her son Grant and his family. She lost her beloved son in 2000 but was able to carry on and continued to be a source of strength to Gen and family. She lived a full and long life and the world is truly better for having known Agnes. Agnes is survived by her daughter-in-law Gen; three grandchildren, Rob (Michelle), Lenore Adams and Ward Spiro; and three great-grandchildren, Nathan Adams, Kyle and Cindy Spiro. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Giovanni Di Vincenzo officiating. Graveside Service to follow at Union Cemetery. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Memorial donations may be made directly to ALS Society of Alberta, 400, 320 – 23 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB, T2S 0J2.
