Obituary of John Frederick Jarrell

John Frederick “Jack” Jarrell of Calgary, formerly of Kingston, Ontario, passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on the morning of September 30, 2004. He is survived by his three sons, Dr. John Frederick (Cathy), Francis Daniel (Debbie) and James Lawrence (Kathy), all of Calgary. He will also be missed terribly by his six grandchildren – Alyson (Travis), Adrienne (Shawn), Shannon, Michael, Steven and Jaclyn, and three great grandchildren Connor, Riley and Piper of Calgary – and Margie and John Smythe of Kingston. Jack was predeceased by his sister, Helen Webster, his brother Joseph Jarrell, and by his beloved wife of 57 years, Helen “Honey” nee O’Connor. Jack was born in 1919 in Kingston, Ontario of Mary and Joseph Jarrell. His early years were spent having adventures in the streets of Kingston and hunting and fishing in Southern Ontario. He went overseas in 1942 with the Royal Canadian Air Force and saw active duty as Flying Officer in Southern England from 1944 to 1945. After the war he attended Queen’s University, gaining graduate and post graduate degrees in metallurgical engineering. He was with the Steel Company of Canada until the mid – 1960’s when he was lured away (Stelco said “stolen”) by Dosco Inc. to build and manage the cold mill in Contrecouer, Quebec. He rose to the position of Director of Metallurgy with Sidbec, Inc. at the time of his retirement in 1985. In retirement he joined the Board of the Hotel Dieu Hospital in 1987 and was appointed Chairman in 1990. Jack was instrumental in supporting the mission of the hospital during re-structuring. Jack was a devoted and loving father. His wise counsel and deep insight to his sons and sense of humor will be sadly missed. After Honey passed in 2001, his sons joined him at his house every Friday night for dinner to enjoy his friendship, share their interests in their families and careers and receive direction where appropriate. They are so proud of how he managed without Honey despite missing her deeply. He had just completed his latest model railroading mega project.
