Obituary of Harold Roy Antliff

Dr. Harold Roy Antliff slipped from time to eternity in his permanent heavenly home on Saturday, September 18, 2004. Born in Calgary on February 9, 1925, he leaves behind his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Doreen (nee Gowdy); son Creighton (Jeannie); daughter Arla Mae Dee (Steve) Harmer; grandchildren, Luke, Bethanie, Andrea Harmer, and Spencer Antliff, all of Calgary; his brother Jack (Nan) of Australia; nephews Robert (Debbie) of Tasmania and Clayton (Brenda) of Toronto, ON. He was predeceased by his parents Arthur and May; and his brother and sister-in-law Bert and Shirley. Harold earned his B.Sc. in Honours Biochemistry at the University of Alberta in 1950, achieving his Master of Science degree the following year. At the University of Kansas he completed his Doctorate in Basic Medical Sciences, specializing in Medical Physiology and General Pathology. Later the family moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Harold was appointed Junior Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin. Throughout these nine years he conducted medical research and published five papers. Upon the family’s return to Calgary in 1959, Harold founded one of the first medical diagnostic laboratories in Calgary, Bioclinical Laboratories, later known as Associated Clinical Laboratories. Since his retirement in 1995, he has been a very knowledgeable, compassionate voluntary consultant on cancer, mainly prostate cancer that he has fought vigorously for thirteen years. Having a very active and creative mind, Harold pursued many other interests, including his private pilots license and co-ownership of three different aircrafts. His lifelong love of the outdoors, agriculture and cattle resulted in him, along with his partner, founding the first private Artificial Insemination business for dairy and beef cattle in Alberta. He also owned and operated a cattle ranch and grain farm in partnership with his father-in-law, wife, son and daughter. Harold achieved many worldly goals during his seventy-nine years, but he considered it his greatest purpose to serve his Lord Jesus Christ. He was a prominent layman in Christian service, as a life-long active member of First Baptist Church. He expressed his gift of administration as a Board Member of numerous Christian and mission organizations by helping with finances, buildings and medical health concerns. He was a director of Operation Eyesight and co-founder of Venture Teams International. As a keen student of the scriptures he taught many Bible classes throughout the years. Many people remember his lectures for young people on Family Life Education. Harold’s priority was to his cherished wife Doreen and his family, with whom he shared a strong and warm relationship. This much loved husband, father and grandfather will be sadly missed but we rejoice that he is now seeing Jesus face to face and is reunited with family members who have gone on before.
