Obituary of Hazel Simpkins
Hazel Simpkins of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital on Friday, September 17, 2004 at the age of 94.
Hazel was born in Three Fathom Harbour, Halifax County, NS on September 6, 1910. Hazel was a retired Registered Nurse, a graduate of the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax and a Honourary Life Member of the Victoria General Nurses Association.
Prior to moving to Calgary in 1999, Hazel was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Halifax and a former member of the Halifax Curling Club and Waegwaltic Club.
While in Calgary, Hazel was a member of Christ Church Elbow Park and an active member of the Heritage Seniors (St. Andrews Presbyterian Church). She enjoyed playing bridge along with many other social activities with family and friends.
Hazel was the youngest daughter of the late William and Jane Graham and was the last surviving family member of her generation. She was predeceased by her loving husband, of fifty-six years James John Simpkins; her brothers, Frank and Cyril Graham; and her sisters, Winnifred Woodworth and Rita Powell.
Hazel is survived by her only child Sandra Gibbs, son-in-law Brian Gibbs and granddaughter Heather Williams (Bryce), all of Calgary; granddaughter Katherine Gibbs (Curtis Leifso) of Ottawa; brother-in-law Arthur Simpkins of Toronto; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Wednesday, September 22, 2004 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm.
To celebrate Hazel’s life a Funeral Service will be held at Christ Church Elbow Park (3602 – 8th Street S.W.) on Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 2:30 pm with The Rev. Kersi Bird officiating.
