Obituary of The Most Paul O’Byrne

The Most Rev. Paul J. O’Byrne of Calgary passed away at the Beverly Centre on Thursday, September 2, 2004 at the age of 81 years. He was born on December 12, 1922 and ordained on February 21, 1948. Bishop Paul J. O’Byrne served the Diocese of Calgary as Bishop from August 22, 1968 until his retirement and was named Bishop Emeritus of Calgary on January 16, 1998. He previously served as priest at St. John’s (1948-1950), St. Patrick’s in Medicine Hat (1950-1954), Pastor of St. Edmunds (Christ the King) in Medicine Hat (1954-1961), St. Mary’s in Banff (1961-1967) and at St. Joseph’s in Calgary (1967-1968). He was Administrator of Diocese after Bishop Klein’s death. Bishop O’Byrne is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary McLean of California and Margaret and Bill Haun of Sydney, BC; a sister-in-law Patricia O’Byrne; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his older brothers, Rev. Patrick O’Byrne in 1996 and Daniel O’Byrne in 1995.
