Obituary of Sofia Roman

Sofia Roman of Calgary passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Patti, on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the age of 89 years. Sofie was born in Ukraine on October 16, 1914. She came to Canada as a young bride and settled in Saskatchewan with her husband, Harry. All of their married years were spent in Saskatchewan in the Kyle district where Sofie was a stay-at-home mother devoting her time to raising her two daughters, Ola and Patti, helping Harry with his business, tending her enormous garden and contributing to the C.W.L. and the community. After the passing of her husband in 1966 she moved to Calgary with Patti to be closer to her daughter Ola and Ola’s family. She soon found employment with the City of Calgary at the Children’s Shelter and later at the Children’s Detention Home where she proudly served as Head Cook. Sofie truly loved the children and the people she worked with and they loved her in return. She retired in 1979. After retirement she did some traveling, enjoyed time spent with good neighbours and friends and was active in the C.W.L. at St. Bernard’s Parish. In 1998 she sold her long-time residence in Parkdale and moved to the Westview Seniors’ Lodge and then to Aspen Lodge where she made many new friends. In recent weeks she spent precious hours with her daughters, sons-in-law and each and every grandchild and great-grandchild. Her family is left with many special memories of good food and good times in Baba’s kitchen. Sofie is survived by her two daughters, Ola Sage (Gerry) of Chemainus, BC and Patti Hesketh (Craig) of Calgary; grandchildren, Natalie Peters (Mike) of Victoria, BC, Christopher Sage of Taichung, Taiwan, Michael Hesketh of Montreal, QC and Jonathan Hesketh of Calgary; and great-granddaughters, Sophie and Claire Peters.
