Obituary of Mary Carolyn Hodgkin
Mary Carolyn Hodgkin (nee Fares), known to all her friends and family as “Cherrie” passed away at home on Monday, June 21, 2004, after a long battle with cancer, at the age of 80 years.
Cherrie was born in Winnipeg, MB with a shock of red hair. Her father, Clifford Fares called her his ?Cherry Blossom,? the source of her nick name. The family moved to Calgary and resided in the Elbow Park area when she was thirteen years of age. At that time the Elbow River was the South West edge of Calgary and she lived only two blocks from the river. She was the granddaughter of William Clifford Fares, of Gordon, Ironsides and Fares, Co., a large cattle ranch and beef packing corporation associated with the Bar U Ranch. She loved horses, she rode her first round-up at the age of eight, and love the Calgary Stampede. She met her husband to be Kurt Hodgkin, an American soldier assigned to the Yukon, on R&R in Calgary, when her father brought him home to dinner. The couple spent the next twenty-eight years in the United States, where they raised their one son Klif, and returned to Calgary in 1973. Cherrie loved Canada and was very glad to live out her life here in Calgary.
