Obituary of Violet Powlan

Vi Powlan passed away at the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 following a lengthy illness. Vi was a prominent figure in the Calgary theatre dating back to the glory years of Workshop 14, the Calgary Theatre Singers, and CBC Radio Theatre. She was equally at home starring in musicals like Oklahoma, Carrousel, Gigi and The King and I, or in dramatic productions like Shaw’s Arms and the Man, or Our Town. Her first movie role in 1969 was the part of Sister Balonika, a nun who has a talent for music. She is survived by her sister Evelyn, brothers, Ron, Roy, Frank, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) on Saturday, June 26, 2004 at 9:00 A.M. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Mausoleum.
