Obituary of Gordon Thomas Legge

Gordon Thomas Legge, beloved husband of Laurie and dad to Brendan of Calgary, went missing in the mountains on February 22, 2004. His remains were found on Tuesday, May 11, 2004. Gordon was born and raised in Calgary, attended U of C and began his journalism career with the Calgary Herald, Banff office. In a career that spanned more than thirty years, he wrote for News of the North in Yellowknife, the Canadian Press, Ottawa Citizen, Toronto Star, and MacLean’s magazine before rejoining the Calgary Herald in 1987 as Religion Editor. His religion assignments took him around the world from Rwanda to Central America to the former Soviet Union. He was deeply touched by the faith of all peoples and shared their stories in his articles and columns. Gordon was working with the Billy Graham Evangelical Association/Samaritan’s Purse at the time of his death. Gordon is survived by his wife Laurie, son Brendan – the light of his life; mother Eva, brother Ray, step-sons Jay (Wanda), Rob (Kerri), Craig (Corinne), grandchildren Nathan, Laura, Andrew, and step-mother Vi Legge. Gordon was predeceased by his father Harold Thomas in 2002. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Ascension Catholic Church (1100 Berkshire Boulevard N.W.) on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
