Obituary of Adam Gommerman

It is with great sorrow that we announce that Adam Gommerman, beloved husband of Mae for the past forty-nine years, passed away on Sunday, April 18, 2004 after a short battle with leukemia at the age of 74 years. Adam was born on February 5, 1930 in Gravelburg, SK and was the eldest of five boys. The family moved to Winnipeg, MB on December 7, 1941. Adam worked hard from the age of fourteen helping his mother raise his younger brothers. At the age of eighteen he left home, travelling for the CPR as a fireman and later as an engineer on the steam engines. He eventually settled in Thunder Bay, ON where he met his wife Mae. They were married in the summer of 1954 and had three children. He went back to school in 1968 to become an Accountant and in October of 1969 the family moved to Calgary. Adam worked for Delta Projects and Fuller Austin of Canada. In 1985, after Mae suffered a major stroke, he retired and became her primary caregiver. Adam was an avid sportsman. He was a scratch golfer, a member of the Inglewood Golf & Curling Club for thirty-four years, and an excellent skier and skater. He played and watched football, hockey and was a champion boxer in his youth. Adam passed on this love of sports to his grandson Stephen whom he loved to cheer on. Adam’s dedication to his wife and family was always his priority. This was evident in the family that travelled out to see him this past week. He was visited by his brother Jim and wife Marion; nieces Jen and Shelley; and nephews Paul and Mike. The visits, prayers and phone calls of many other family and friends have comforted the family the past few weeks. Adam was a role model to many for the integrity, fortitude, and helpfulness that he displayed during his lifetime. Besides his loving wife, Adam is survived by his daughters, Dixie Inman (Vaughn) and Gayle Allison (Graeme); three granddaughters, Lisa, Jennifer and Samantha; his grandson Stephen and by many other relatives and friends. Adam was predeceased by his son Stephen in 1980, his brother-in-law Dale in 1991 and his brother Tony in 1979. A Celebration of Adam’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY’S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W.) on Friday, April 23, 2004 at 12:30 P.M.
