Obituary of John Edward Bradley

Dr. John Edward Bradley of Calgary passed away at the Mount Royal Care Centre on Monday, March 22, 2004 at the age of 86 years. John made a significant difference to improving the world in the field of medicine and health care. He raised his family with his beloved Lola (predeceased) wife of fifty-five years and worked as a family physician for twenty years in Wainwright, AB. Later he served as the first Executive Director of the Glenrose Provincial Hospital and Chair of the Alberta Hospital Commission. In 1977, Dr. Bradley was appointed as a Special Advisor on Medical Research and was charged with creating the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research now recognized internationally for fostering medical research. He was Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta. Dr. Bradley was a Past President of the Alberta Curling Association, the Royal Glenora Club and the Mayfair Golf Club. In 2001, “Brad” became the first physician in Alberta to be inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. He was an Honourary Life Member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and recently received an Alumni Award of Excellence from the University of Alberta. “Brad” was a Mason for fifty-five years and remained a devout Anglican throughout his life. Dr. Bradley is survived by his loving son and best friend Bill; daughter Ann (Rob); son David; grandchildren, Brandy (Joel) and Andrew; great-grandson Josiah; sister Jean (John) and close friends Sheila and Colin.
