Obituary of Elizabeth Reid

Elizabeth “May” Reid, beloved wife of Gordon Wesley Reid of Calgary, passed away at the AgapÚ Hospice on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at the age of 83 years. May was born January 5, 1921 on the farm in Hazel Valley S.D., Kipling Saskatchewan, second child born to Elsie May Reid and William Johnston Gordon. As a young girl she moved with her family to Lintlaw, SK, began her working life at a young age, housekeeping and farm work, worked across the prairies to Vancouver Island. At the age of thirty-two, October 31, 1953 she married Gordon, they lived and farmed in Dafoe, SK on his family homestead. In 1957 they moved to Calgary to work and raise their family. Her heart was always in Saskatchewan, she was happiest when with family and those who loved the Lord Jesus Christ. They opened their home for several years to clients of the Mental Health Association. The past few years they resided in an apartment where she made friends and enjoyed her neighbours in Westbourne Place. May was a loving and hardworking wife, mother and grandmother, she loved her family dearly. She had a lovely smile, enjoyed games, was a great cook, enjoyed meeting people, self reliant, determined, principled and patient. May faced her challenges of these last months just as she always has with prayer, faith, courage, patience, determination, love, and dignity. It was never about her, always about us. We miss her so very much and will hold her dear in our hearts forever. Besides her loving husband, May is survived by a son Daniel (Patricia) Reid; daughters Joyce (Rick) Castonguay and Darlene Martin; and grandchildren, Alison McDonald, Barbara Price (Tim), Shalena Crandall (Doug), Blaine, Katrina and Krystle Reid, Dennis and Dale Gano (Martin); Rob and (Jodi) Castonguay; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Victoria Crandall. She is also survived by her loving sister-in-law Martha Froats; sisters, Christina Underwood, Daisy (Van) Campbell, Isabel (Robert) Barber, and Emily Campbell; brothers, Ivan (Gladys) Gordon, Albert (Kay) Gordon, and by many nieces and nephews. May was predeceased by her daughter Ruth in 1980; parents William (1966) and Elsie (1986); and her sisters, Violet Gillard, Mabel Jefferson and Hazel Grant, to mention only a few.
