Obituary of Dorothea Elizabeth McHugh

Dorothea (Dot) Elizabeth McHugh of Calgary passed away at the Hillcrest Extendicare on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at the age of 83 years. Dorothy, or Dot as she was known to friends, was born in Calgary on November 5, 1920. She enjoyed a rewarding professional and personal life during her long history in Calgary. She and her mother founded the Calgary Business College in the 1940s. For twenty years Dorothy, her husband, and their business partner Elsie Tighe owned and operated one of Calgary’s few independent funeral homes, The Chapel of the Bells, McHugh and Tighe. A former director of the Catholic Women’s League, she was also an avid writer who had published a book of inspirational verse and a number of biographical articles. When she was not engaged in these entrepreneurial and creative pursuits, Dorothy could often be found indulging her life-long love of music at the piano at home or at dances with friends at the #264 Royal Canadian Legion. Her indomitable spirit, keen wit, and winning smile uncompromised by adversity were an inspiration, and she will be dearly missed by the many whose lives she touched. Dorothy is survived by her son Tim McHugh; and two daughters, Nancy and Mary Ann McHugh. She was predeceased by husband Wilfred Lewis McHugh; son Daniel Sean McHugh; parents Mary Rachel and Francis Patrick Hussey; brother Michael Hussey; and two sisters, Rose Stewart and Loretta Garland. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (835 Northmount Drive N.W.) on Friday, March 19, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. To forward condolences go to www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.
