Obituary of Catherine Muriel Hotzel

Muriel Hotzel of Calgary passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre on Friday, February 27, 2004. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Susan (David) of Pickering, ON, Charles (Hetty) and Stuart (Barb) of Calgary, and Alastair (Cari-Marie) presently working in Mexico; grandchildren Erika, Iain and Derek; brother Eric of Sydney, Australia; sister Maureen of Scotland; and many nephews and nieces in Australia and South Africa. Muriel was predeceased by her husband Harry in 1976; her beloved brothers, David, Charles, Ian, and Frank; and sisters-in-law, Violet, Valerie and Maisie. Muriel was born in Inverness and grew up in Ardersier, Scotland. After serving as a nurse in the Second World War, Muriel trained as a teacher and settled in Leeds, England, where she met her husband and raised her family. In 1967, the family moved to Montreal where Muriel continued her teaching career at Vincent Massey Elementary School in Greenfield Park. Muriel took great pride in her teaching career and enjoyed the respect of colleagues and students alike. Muriel enjoyed an active retirement in Ingleside, ON. She served for several years as President of the local Women’s Institute, actively participated in her church and pursued numerous hobbies. During this time, she also took several trips to visit family in England, Scotland, South Africa, Australia, and Calgary. In November 1999, Muriel moved to the Scenic Acres Retirement Residence in Calgary, where she volunteered in the library and organized a cribbage league. Muriel loved to laugh and always looked on the bright side of things. She was a special person and a great friend, mother and grandmother. A Memorial Service will be held at Scenic Acres Retirement Residence (150 Scotia Landing N.W.) on Monday March 8, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. Interment will take place in July at St. Lawrence Valley Union Cemetery, Ingleside, ON.
