Obituary of Douglas William Newborn

Douglas William “Pops” Newborn of Calgary, born June 9, 1918, passed away March 3, 2004. Doug was a native Calgarian who received his formal education in Calgary before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939. He served overseas before coming back to Canada to instruct navigation to air crews before they went “over there.” After being discharged from the RCAF with the rank of Flight Lieutenant, he married Irene in her native Montreal. They then moved back to Calgary where he began his articles for Chartered Accountancy. He practiced publicly for over twenty years, becoming a senior partner in a major Canadian Chartered Accountancy firm, then practiced in private industry for ten years prior to his retirement in 1978. Doug was an active member of the community, lending his leadership talents to a number of organizations. He was a Life Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta. Doug was a longtime member of the Earl Grey Golf Club where he served as a Director. He also served for a number of years as the Treasurer for the Calgary and District Senior Men’s Golf Association. He was a former President of the Bow Valley Kiwanis Club and the Banff Trail Community Association. Doug was predeceased by his loving wife Irene in 1977, and is survived by his sons Ronald and Sean. A private Graveside Service will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2004 at Queen’s Park Cemetery, followed by a Memorial Service to be held between 12:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M. at the Scandinavian Centre (739 – 20th Avenue N.W.).
