Obituary of Josephus Martens

Josephus (Jeff) Martens, beloved husband of Jeanny Martens of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Beverly Care Centre on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 at the age of 94 years. Jeff was born on April 28, 1909 in the Hague, Netherlands and led an active life in Holland pursuing his musical interests performing in bands as a drummer and trumpet player, winning many medals as a bicycle racer and finally taking up the technical careers in electronics and automotives. Through his skills and tenacity during the years of World War II occupation, Jeff was able to provide for his family and assist many neighbours with food obtained from rural farmers while working for a laundry service. In 1952 he immigrated to Canada with his first wife Maria, and son to take up a technical career in automotives. Throughout his life, Jeff has always shared his unique sense of humour in conversation with others, which most often, added some laughter to their day. His love of flowers was evident from the beautiful display of summer blossoms throughout his back yard, enjoyed by friends and family each year. Besides his loving wife Jeanny, Jeff is survived by his only son, Joseph and daughter-in-law Bonnie, and two grandsons James and Michael. He was predeceased by his first wife Maria, in 1961, previously by his sister Cor and very recently by his brother Hank, both in Holland. Jeff will also be fondly remembered by all his friends in the Dutch Canadian Choir, where he was a member for more than fifteen years.
