Obituary of John Leo Prevey

John Prevey, beloved husband of Patricia of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Wednesday, February 25, 2004, after a short illness, at the age of 72 years. Born on January 10, 1932 in North Adams, Massachusetts, John attended Drury High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track. As a fourteen year old freshman, he won Western Mass. Division 1 One Mile championship, the first freshman to do so. A BSc. graduate of the University of Massachusetts, majoring in geology, he also lettered in track running the quarter mile. In 1955 he received a MSc. from the University of Missouri. Following his marriage on June 12, 1954, John and Pat traveled to many locales, including Argentina, where their sons were born, Brazil, Texas, and finally to Calgary in 1973. The result of his team work with Mobil Oil and Mobil Canada and the successful oil discovered on Sable Island and Hibernia gave him a great sense of pleasure and pride. Following his retirement in 1990, John added to his enjoyment of life by taking up the hobby of birding and traveled extensively to find a “new one” to add to his life list. Volunteering at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary was another way to continue to “watch his birds”. He also enjoyed cooking for his family and friends – an activity at which he excelled. Besides his loving wife Pat, John is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Stephen and Mark and Lissette; and four grandchildren, Brittany, Patrick, Christopher, and Ashley. He is also survived by his much loved brother Bill; and a special cousin Bill Bakey; as well as two sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
