Obituary of Mary Kay Newnham

Mary Kay Newnham (nee Duffy) of Calgary passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Sunday, February 15, 2004 at the age of 90 years. Mary Kay was born on February 23, 1913 at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary. She finished grade twelve at St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated as a Registered Nurse from Holy Cross Hospital with the class of 1935. Mary Kay married Frank Newnham on June 1, 1937 in Calgary, where she nursed all of her immediate and extended family throughout her life. She was always there to nurse the sick and dying, and give strength and encouragement to heal the living. Mary Kay was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Cathedral, the Glencoe Club, the American Women’s League and Holy Cross Nurses Auxiliary, and volunteered for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Mary Kay loved to join in the fun at her Bridge clubs, Glencoe, American Women League and Elbow Towers Bridge/Card Club. She always had a positive attitude (“I will make the best of a situation.”) and loved being with people and going out for meals. Mary Kay was so interested in people. She needed to know who you were, what you did and how you were doing. Mary Kay is survived by her three children Bill (Margaret) Newnham of Calgary, Marianne Carlson of Edmonton and Jim Newnham of Whitehorse, YT; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Frank Newnham in 1984, her parents William and Anne Duffy and her brother Bill Duffy.
