Obituary of Richard Holley Swann

Richard Holley Swann, beloved husband of Margaret of Calgary, passed away at his home on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at the age of 84 years. Rich was a caring, capable and loving person who devoted a lifetime of service to his profession and made outstanding contributions to his community and province. He started the Roxboro-Rideau Community Association and was its first President. Rich was President of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta, President of the Pastoral Institute (now Calgary Family Service Bureau), President of the Crestview Foundation which amongst a myriad of other philanthropic deeds provided start-up funds for the Calgary Women’s Shelter building and for the present United Way building. For over thirty years Rich and Marg operated a ranch near the town of Priddis, while he was actively engaged in the petroleum industry. He was an accomplished singer and soloist in choirs at Knox United, and later Red Deer Lake United Church, where he was on the Board of Directors. An ardent golfer, particularly during his retirement years, he was a member of the Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club. Rich is survived by his loving wife, Margaret; three daughters, Linda (Michael) Folk, Susan (Paul) Saracini and Robin (Tom) Sparkes; two sons, David (Laureen) and Peter (Paula); thirteen grandchildren; his sister Aileen (Aidan) Butterfield; and a brother Gordon (Marg). A Memorial Service will be held at the Red Deer Lake United Church (on Highway 22X, approximately one mile west of 37th Street S.W.) on Saturday, January 24, 2004 at 2:00 P.M.
