Obituary of Bruce James Milne

On Christmas Eve, surrounded by his loving family, Bruce left this world to be with the stars. His lengthy struggle with cancer was courageous and his spirit was strong until the end. At the young age of 41, he was predeceased by both sets of grandparents (Mr. and Mrs. Henry and Helena Rankel and Mr. and Mrs. Frank and Alice Milne). Bruce will be dearly missed by his mother Pat, his father Lindsay, and sister Pam and her husband Keith, and their children, Zachary and Brett. In addition, he will be fondly remembered by his uncles and aunts, their children and his extended family in the U.K. and Channel Islands. Bruce was widely traveled and achieved many things in his life, including attaining his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering (U of C), and teaching at the Universities of Saskatchewan and Calgary. Recently he worked as an engineering consultant in the petroleum industry with ATECH Application Technology Limited, where he made many friends at ATECH, Encana and Pan Canadian. Besides his love of teaching petroleum and chemical engineering, Bruce particularly loved mountain climbing, rock and ice climbing, and camping in the Rockies with his special friends. He also visited Japan, Australia, Venezuela, the U.K., and Europe, and climbed in Mexico and Peru where he accumulated many fond memories. Fishing, back-country skiing and astronomy were some of his favorite recreational pastimes, and when relaxing, he loved watching movies, listening to his vast collection of music and reading. Most of all he enjoyed socializing, dining and debating with his friends in their many haunts in the Calgary area. Everyone that knew Bruce enjoyed his quiet, thoughtful demeanour and his keen sense of humour. His students particularly appreciated his teaching abilities and accorded him many honours. The family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses, and health care workers at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Foothills Hospital, Home Care, and We Care, who treated Bruce with such respect and kindness. In particular, Dr. Barry Bultz became a great friend and inspiration to Bruce throughout his treatment. A Celebration of Bruce’s Life will be held privately with his family, friends and close business associates, when a suitable time has been determined.
