Obituary of Ralph Eldon EWING

January 30, 1930 – Kirkland Lake, ON March 25, 2017 – Calgary, AB It is with sadness we announce that Ralph Eldon Ewing passed away on Saturday March, 25, 2017 at the age of 87. Born January 30, 1930 in Kirkland Lake, Ont. to the late Harry and Viola (nee Richardson) Ewing, Ralph spent his early years on the gold mine, hunting and fishing. In true Ewing fashion, he was often found causing trouble by doing things such as pulling a “Mary-Poppins” by jumping off the family coal shed with his mother’s open umbrella, breaking his wrist in the process. Passionate for hockey, Ralph grew up on the hockey rink and followed his dreams, playing for the Guelph Biltmores. In time, the ice would end up being where he would come to meet his beautiful wife, Marie. Married on April 26, 1952 Ralph and Marie spent their lives filled with love and devoted to their two children, Nancy Ann Ewing and Brian Ralph Ewing. Ralph’s ultimate career choice was the stock market. He started out as a trainee at Doherty Roadhouse in Kirkland Lake and over the years worked his way up to Partner, Vice-President and Director of Midland Doherty Limited in Calgary. He was also Chairman of the Alberta Stock Exchange. A dedicated and loving grandfather and great grandfather, Grandpa Ralph will forever be known for his warm hugs and forehead kisses. Grandpa Ralph was a mentor and golfing companion for Aidan, and always made a point of telling him that, “Real men drink their tea and coffee black”. He stirred up trouble with and raised Alexandra to be the ultimate chocolate connoisseur, and was never one to turn down dessert! Ralph loved to buy penny stocks, sometimes making money on them and very passionate about the ones he picked! He also engaged in great debates with Andrew and taught his great grandchildren the art of Great-Grandpa Ralph’s signature handshake. He was also a professional armchair referee for the Calgary Flames, rarely missing a game. Always the home handyman and forever clumsy, Ralph single handedly kept the Band-Aid brand in business. One always seemed to be adorning the top of his head… Known for his quick wit, dry sense of humor, and a smile that could light up even the darkest of rooms, Ralph’s charm was like no others. He was fiery and passionate, never one to hold back his opinion, and could always be found in the heat of a colourful debate. An avid outdoorsman, Ralph spent his later years walking through the Sibbald Flats area hunting ruffed grouse with his son Brian. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, Ralph’s memory lives on through his wife, Marie (nee Budan), children Nancy and Brian, grandchildren Aidan, Andrew, Alexandra, Nicholas and Mary, and great grandchildren Declan, Carson, and Jake. Ralph always appreciated the simple things in life, and enjoyed each one to the fullest! In keeping with Ralph’s wishes, no Services will be held. Condolences may be forwarded through .
