Obituary of Pearl Marguerite WHITTEN
November 11, 1920 – Strongfield, SK
January 23, 2017 – Calgary, AB
Pearl Whitten (nee Hutchinson) passed away peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2017 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 96 years.
She was the first child born to Robert and Mabel Hutchinson of Strongfield, SK on November 11, 1920. Pearl received her education in Strongfield and at the age of eighteen began her migration to Alberta. Her first stop was in Rosetown, SK. From there she moved to Didsbury, AB and worked at a local restaurant. She then moved to Calgary and completed her career as a “keypunch operator” at Mobil Oil.
Pearl was a lover and master of the “art of crocheting”. She made countless numbers of tablecloths, runners and dollies. Pearl was proud of the fact that she had produced forty-two crocheted afghans for first, second and third cousins as well as many friends and neighbours.
Pearl married Harold Whitten in April of 1970. They were some of the first residents to move a mobile home into Midfield Mobile Home Park in Calgary. Pearl resided at Midfield until 2006, at that time due to poor vision she moved to Prince of Peace Manor, where she resided for 8 years. In 2014 Pearl moved to The George Boyack where she resided until her passing.
She leaves to mourn her passing her sister-in-law, Lorraine Hutchinson of Saskatoon; her niece Faye (Brent) McVeigh of Kenaston, SK: their children, Ashley (Tyler) Thall and sons Gavin and Kaden of Hanley SK: Sarah McVeigh (Chris Durand), Courtney (Ryan) Thall and Logan McVeigh all of Saskatoon SK. Pearl is also survived by her stepdaughter, Alice (Bob) Lewis of High River and her three children.
Also left to feel the void are her Calgary family, Merv and Vicky Lee: their children, Derek (Karyse), Warner and Sloane Lee as well as Erin Lee all of Calgary. Pearl was Vicky’s cousin but was referred to as “auntie” and was treated as a grandmother. Many cousins will also sadly miss Pearl.
Pearl was predeceased by her loving parents, Robert and Mabel Hutchinson; her husband Harold Whitten; and her brother Gordon (Tom) Hutchinson.
A graveside service and celebration of Pearl’s life will be announced at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire memorial tributes may be made to Strongfield Community Hall, Village of Strongfield, Saskatchewan, S0H 3Z0 or a charity of the donors choice.
In living memory of Pearl Whitten, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Eastside, 5388 MEMORIAL DRIVE N.E., Calgary, AB Telephone: 403- 248-8585.
