Douglas was called home by his Savior on November 12. He was blessed with a full life of many years. From a happy childhood in Fort William, Ontario which included spending summers in the village of Bayfield, Ontario with a dear uncle, aunts and their children. Teaching became a passion for him starting with teaching in a one room log schoolhouse in northern Ontario, then from 1940 to 1945 in the RCAF where he was a respected flight instructor. When Junior Achievement came to Calgary he volunteered as an advisor for grades 9 – 12 as they learned to set up companies, make products, and learn how businesses are run. He had strong a belief in the Free Enterprise system and shared with people the damages of Communism. In 1940, on a ski trip to Banff, he met “the prettiest girl on the train”. He and Joyce Blight were married in 1942 and raised their two wonderful sons, John and Gordon. Their children and grandchildren have been a wonderful delight. His career, in the exciting time of the development of the oil industry in Alberta, began in 1949 with a telephone call from his good friend Max Bell asking Doug to work for him. The company’s name changed several times during Doug’s employment, from Calvan Consolidated, which was taken over by Canadian Fina Oil Limited, then by Petrofina Canada Limited and ending up 32 years later having worked basically for the same company all of that time. After being a widower for 10 years Doug married “his darling Carol”, and they had 44½ years of enjoying each other and all the families and friends that came along with his two happy marriages. Retirement was filled by visits with family and friends in various locations and lots of golf. Doug is survived by his wife Carol; son John and his wife Cynthia; granddaughter Edelene Ohman (Creig) and great grandsons Wesley and Davis; son Gordon and granddaughter Lisa McGillvary (Brian) and daughters Jayden and Kaya; granddaughter Courtney Mason (Chris); daughters Avery and Quinn, and grandson Alex Fraser; many sisters-in-law and brothers in law and nieces and nephews.
