Condolences
I was a former student of his at Edison School. Just today my mother was curious to see what ended up happening to him (we always thought he had just moved away from Willow park when pursuing his masters). To say coming across this page was a stunner would be an understatement and was definitely a moving moment. Still remember your great sense of humour and sick breakdance moves even if 10 years have passed.
Anyways, condolences to his family. You passed far too early.

Corinne, You and Derek have been a great mentor to me for the past 7 years. Derek’s beautiful soul, creative mind and passion will always be remembered. Just a few weeks ago we were sitting on my couches laughing And drinking wine talking about paint colours, the us election, our upcoming trips, the board of education, how both of you were hopeless romantics and stating that I wanted to “be like Corinne when I grow up” without you and derek I wouldn’t have my home. Derek and you have always been for me helping me fight my battles and celebrating my success. i thank both you and Derek for the mentorship and encouragement you have given to me. I’m so sorry for your loss, and my heart goes out to you and your entire family. Derek’s love for you, his whimsical choice of wording and his smile will always be cherished.

Derek tirelessly and creatively taught physics through the building of soapbox derby cars in Okotoks. His students followed him around like little ducklings. He lives on through the confidence he instilled in those children, my daughter included. So sorry for your loss.

My deepest condolences to you at this sad and difficult time. I always looked forward to visiting with Derek at the many real estate/business dinners and parties with you both. Our conversations usually centred around our shared interest in children and their development and learning, and I always came away learning something from
Derek and being inspired by his passion for people. You appeared to be a couple who loved to learn together, share time with friends and family, and travel the world. I know it will be hard to go on without him Corinne, but you lived such a full and passionate life that you will have many memories to cherish of your life with Derek.
The world has lost one of the good ones. My condolences to his family . I will celebrate his life Montreal style on November 26th.
To all Derek’s family, I send my love and deep sorrow for his passing. Derek was always a staple presence at the Benchmark family get-togethers. Always rather quiet it seemed, but could be drawn into a short conversation when coaxed. He will be missed!

So sad to read this. I knew Derek back when he was a part of the North Shore Mustangs football team. Lots of fun memories and so nice to read that he had a wonderful life helping and teaching others. Rest in peace, Derek.
My deepest condolences. I remember Derek fondly as teammates at John Abbott College. Although we lost touch afterwards, I am so happy to see that he lived a life so full and touched so many people.
