Obituary of Anne BEATY

January 14, 1958 – Oakland, California September 9, 2016 – Airdrie, Alberta It is with profound sadness that the family of Anne Beaty announce her sudden passing on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, in her home in Airdrie, at the age of 58 years. Anne was born in Oakland, California, January 14, l958, and moved with the family to Missoula, Montana, where her father was a professor of geography at the University of Montana for eleven years. In l969, the family of four moved to Lethbridge for her father to take a teaching position at the new University of Lethbridge, and she continued her education there. She finished high school and in 1978 married Doug Christie. They lived in Fort Macleod for thirteen years, where their two children Kate and Sarah were born. Later, she earned a journalism degree at Mount Royal University and worked for the Airdrie Echo for many years, first as a reporter-photographer and later as the editor. During this time, she became fondly known to the RCMP and other service groups as “Echo Annie”. She also earned a BA degree in political science from the University of Calgary and, later, an MA from the university’s Centre for Military and Strategic Studies. Following this, she became editor of AirdrieLife magazine and the communications coordinator at the Airdrie Public Library. Anne loved books and reading. She loved flowers and gardening. She loved her cat, Isis. She loved traveling, first with her family, then with her husband, and then with her girls, who were the joy of her life. She loved Airdrie, its demographically youthful energy, its multicultural population. In the last summer of her life, she spent many evening hours biking through its neighborhoods. Anne touched the lives of so many, and her contagious smile and laugh will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. She is survived by her mother, Jeanne Beaty, formerly of the Crowsnest Pass but now of Airdrie; her two daughters, Kate Vogelaar (Ryan) of Edmonton, and Sarah Christie of Calgary; her toddler granddaughter, Ava Vogelaar; her brother-in-law, Claudio Chiste, of Calgary; her former husband, Doug Christie, of Fort Macleod; her aunt, Lee Kellar, of Michigan; her cousin, Paula Coker, of Texas; and numerous other cousins in Texas, Michigan and Georgia. She was predeceased by her father, C.B. “Chip” Beaty and her older sister, Kate Chiste. A Celebration of Anne’s Life will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. AirdrieLife Magazine will be setting up a scholarship in Anne’s name for students wanting to pursue journalism, details can be found at a later time.
