Obituary of Antonio SCARPINO

May 26, 1926 – Palinudo (Bianchi), Cosenza, Italy September 4, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta Mr. Antonio Scarpino of Calgary passed away peacefully at the age of 90 surrounded by his loving family at the Foothills Medical Centre. Antonio spent his early years in Italy and married his beloved wife Mena in 1952. In 1954 he along with Mena and baby daughter Emilia journeyed to Fernie, B.C. to start a new life in Canada. He worked fourteen years in the coal mine working very hard for his family. Antonio and his family moved to Calgary in 1968. He first worked in construction and then proudly worked as a Caretaker with the Calgary Catholic School District from 1973 until his retirement in 1990. Antonio will be lovingly remembered by his family, relatives, and friends for his generosity, love of life, ability to bring laughter and joy to everyone’s life he touched. His love for Hawaii, the mountains, camping, his garden, his homemade wine, and most of all the unconditional love for his family, and the ability to live life to the fullest, will live on in all of our hearts. Antonio is survived and will be dearly missed by his beloved, caring wife Mena Scarpino (nee Elia); daughter Emilia Santoianni (Luigi) and son Carmine; he was predeceased by his dear son Serafino in 1990. He is also survived by his five grandchildren Anna Perri (Luigi), Chelsey Landry (Billy), Mena and Nick Santoianni, and Brittany Scarpino; great grandchildren Giovanni, Gabriela, and Mirella Perri who will dearly miss their Nonno; his sister Rosina Elia and family in Italy; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Erminia and Alfonso Elia of Fernie, B.C.; sister-in-law Maria Elia (Francesco Elia – predeceased) and numerous loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Vincenzo and Ermelinda Scarpino of Calgary and two brothers and two sisters in Italy. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Parish (1714 – 14th Avenue N.E.) on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetary (St. Joseph’s Section).
