Condolences
Sara and family,
My condolences on the passing of your dad. It was my privilege to know him as a member of the Glencoe Golf Club when I was employed as a server there. He always brightened my day, and shared kind words. Reading about his life, I am astonished at his many accomplishments. Modesty must have been one of his many attributes. There are few like Mr. Shannon. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing.
Dear Danny, Patti, Kelly, Cory and Tara
We are very sorry to hear about Danny’s father’s passing. The tributes here are quite moving. He sounds like an amazing person.

Unfortunately I have been out of town, and was saddened to learn of Justice Shannon’s passing today. His distinguished record included public service for the Alberta legal profession including as President of the Law Society of Alberta. He admitted me to the Alberta Bar 30 years ago this month. I will always remember him as a decent and honourable judge.
Hello Danny!
You probably don’t remember your conversation with me at St. Mary’s High School. I hope that you remember me as one of your teachers. I remember you among the most impressive students I met in my 32-year career in education. Once when we chatted, you commented about your father’s beliefs. What you told me corresponded with my own father’s beliefs. I’ll never forget the conversation. I hope that you know that life is measured by how we live up to our beliefs. My condolences to you and your family.

We met Mel at his grandson “Pip’s” hockey games while our sons played together. He was such a wonderful and supportive grandpa. My parents and others who knew him while he was practicing law spoke of him with the highest regard. His obituary says it all and it turns out Mel was an even more amazing man than we already knew! The past few years I have seen him around the neighborhood or at the Glencoe and he was always smiling and happy to say hi. I wish your family consolation in knowing what a good, kind man your dad and grandpa was and how many peoples’ lives he touched.
To the Shannon family, my condolences for what is surely a very great loss to you. He was a wonderful judge and human being, sagacious, and the most thoughtful of men. A great person, adorned with a merry twinkle in his eyes that I will never forget.
May he know eternal joy.
Michelle Somers
Our deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved father.
Your father was a wonderful man and great jurist and colleague. I recall how helpful he was when I was sworn in as a new judge in 1994. He always had a kind word and smile. Coincidentally, he also called me to the Alberta Bar in Dec 1979.
He will be dearly missed,
Regards,
Justice Carolyn Phillips and John Cordeau, QC
Kathleen, Danny, Steve and families,

I wish to offer my deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Mel Shannon. I have great memories of playing tennis as a child with him and my dad as he was spending time in Quebec City learning French and also visiting him in Calgary during the summer of 1997. Although it was a time when people didn’t stay in touch with the internet and Facebook, Mr. Shannon had given me a warm welcome and introduced me to his family. I was lucky enough to have know the man, always optimistic and very easy to approach. Bon voyage, mon ami!
To all the Shannon’s from all the Bowman’s-
Growing up in the same circle of friends and through so many sports and activities over the years, really demonstrated what a thoughtful man Mel was.
From being my first and only little league baseball coach, to always greeting me warmly around town and especially at the Glencoe, Mel always had a genuine concern for you that made you feel good.
Our sincere condolences,
Mark Bowman
To Kathleen and her family,

To The Shannon Family:
In June 2016, I met Mel for the first and only time when I was in Calgary visiting with my friend, Colleen McDonald (Portland) and we stayed with her cousin, Dory Smyth. We went to Mel’s house to celebrate Father’s Day, where I met Mel’s children and grandchildren. Mel was extremely gracious, generous, kind and gentlemanly. I have warm memories of that evening, when Barbara (Dory’s mother) and Mel, sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” while Barbara played the piano. Later, Barbara encouraged me to join them as she played “The Autumn Leaves.” I sang it in English while Mel sang the lyrics in French. It was a magical moment for me. I felt so very much a part of the family. Mel was so fortunate to be surrounded with much warmth and love in his lifetime. In that brief visit, I recognized this. I send my deepest condolences to his family and to those whose lives he impacted, with his presence. PEACE.

Dear Shannon family,
Our families have been connected for a very long time. My father, Robert M. Nesbitt, QC, and my mother, Jean Dell, were dearest friends to both Mel and Sue. I grew up knowing them well, and I loved their close connection with our family. Mel and Sue even came to my wedding in 1993 in Vancouver. My father fondly remembers talking Mel into coming to Calgary to practice law – there were a few of them who came from the University of Saskatchewan to practice in Calgary, and they all stayed close, calling themselves the Syndicate. My mother thoroughly enjoyed speaking French with Mel over the years: they even emailed in French to each other. I will always remember Mel’s smile, his quiet voice, and his joyful outlook on life. On behalf of Jean, Robert and myself, our heartfelt sympathies on the passing of a true gentleman and the best of friends.
With warmest affection,
Carol (Nesbitt) Holland
Danny and the Shannon Family
Our sincere condolences on the passing of your father.
Having known Mel for many years through our association with the Glencoe Club and the Glencoe Golf Club, he was a fierce competitor yet with a keen sense of fair play. Always greeting you with a smile he was a kind and gentle man.
Having had an extraordinary career on the Bench and in the Community he will be missed.

Hello Shannon Family,
You are all so in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Your father (our “Uncle Mel”) was such an extraordinary man, and he will be deeply missed by so many. I have the image of his beautiful smile imprinted in my mind. And so wonderful that you all inherited that smile so it will live on! I also keep repeating in my mind special things he said and did, and the jokes he used to tell, including while MC ing at our wedding. He had such a gentle nature and eloquent wisdom.
We wish you all peace and smiles in your hearts as you remember all your special times with your dad.
Blessings,
Paula Ettinger, and all the Maughan Family
I am saddened to hear of Mel’s demise and extend my condolences to his family. I had several files with Mel before his appointment to the Bench, and later had the pleasure of appearing before him on numerous occasions. He was always an approachable, fair person, with a feel for the tribulations of those less fortunate. Throughout his long career he was unfailingly decent as well as a warm and friendly person.
I am very sorry to hear of Mel’s passing. I first met him when he was in law school in Saskatoon. He was at a dance along with my future husband, Roy Deyell. Mel was the best man at our wedding and he shocked us by pretending he was going to accompany us on our honeymoon. I will never forget discovering Mel and his companions when I opened the door to our train compartment. Fortunately, they had arranged to get off the train at Delisle, the first stop. He was a very good friend for many years and I will miss him. My sympathy and condolences to Mel’s family. Barbara Deyell and family.
Our condolences are tempered by the fact we were so lucky to have known Mel these many years, The family can take solace they shared so many years with a great man and Albertan
To Danny and Patti and the Shannon family,
My sincerest condolences to all of you on the passing of your father and great man. Justice Shannon was such a kind and respectful human – both in and outside of the courtroom. So sad to hear the news.
My sincere sympathy to all of Mel’s family. The messages submitted attest to Mel’s character and human qualities .
It was my good fortune to have had Mel as a friend and colleague for many years.
Don Medhurst
Deepest sympathies on the passing of Mel. He was a warm-hearted fixture at the Glencoe. I always enjoyed chatting with him. He was forever gracious and had a fantastic optimistic and open demeanor. His wonderful nature is exemplified in his children and grandchildren.
Fondest wishes;
Allan Fowler
I was an articling student at the Court of Queen’s Bench in 1993 and have very fond memories doing research work for Mr. Justice Shannon and discussing legal issues with him. I was amazed at the tact and fairness he displayed in Court towards all parties and in the most trying of circumstances. I could only aspire to be the true gentleman and professional he was.
I am very saddened to hear of Justice Shannon’s passing and send my condolences to his family.
I appeared before him many times as a Crown Prosecutor and was always treated with respect and patience. Indeed because of those qualities I always looked forward to trying cases in his court.
After he retired we enjoyed many lunches together and often reminisced about our respective roles in Alberta’s very first French Jury trial.(Sept 1987).
I will miss him and our friendship.
Rest in peace, mon ami.
My condolences to Mel Shannon’s family. I served with Mel on the board of the Elbow Park Residents’ Association in 1968. I have many fond memories of Mel. We opposed the establishment of a Don Bosco Home, for example, but said we would accept a home for wayward girls instead.
my dear Canadian cousins: I am deeply sorry for your loss. Mel was a great and kind man with a wonderful sense of humor who along w his wife Suzanne has left us a legacy of wonderful people and organizations. I am so happy my sister, Colleen, is able to come to Calgary to represent all of us Portland crew in celebrating Mel’s distinguished life much love jimmy
Sarah and family,
Our deepest sympathies to you and your family.

Sincere sympathy to the Shannon family from the Kimoff’s
My deepest sympathy to your whole family. Mel was a man for all seasons.
I’m sorry to hear of Mel’s passing. A true gentleman in all aspects of his life. He admitted me to the bar in 1977, with my principal, AMH Harradence. He presided over many trials in which I was counsel and did so with such dignity and fairness. I recall, after a difficult and horrific murder trial, he invited myself and Peter Martin, who was Crown counsel, to the Glencoe for drinks, a kind gesture that I have have never forgot. He stands out as one of my favorite justices throughout my career. My sincere condolences. Noel C. O’Brien QC
My sympathy and best wishes go out to Mel’s family and friends. He will be sorely missed by all of us at the Court. I appeared before him many times both as a judge of the Supreme Court of Alberta and the Court of Queen’s Bench. He was an excellent judge- smart, fair with a superb sense of justice. When appointed to the same Court years later I enjoyed talking to him about his experiences. Quite apart from the law he had a very wide array of interests and in many ways he was a “renaissance” man. He was extraordinary.
Our sincere condolences, Mel was a one of a kind, such a gentle man.
My sincere sympathy and condolences to Mel’s family and circle of friends. I appeared before him only once as trial counsel, but I will forever remember the experience. Mel was the consummate gentleman in his dealings with counsel and the parties but he also brought a keen sense of justice and a practical approach to the proceedings.
He was a wonderful judge and lovely human being. Unfortunately, Mel retired from the bench before I was appointed. I would have loved him to share his insight and experiences.
As a staff member at the Glencoe Golf&Country Club, I always looked forward to seeing Mel’s name on the tee sheet. We had many enjoyable, though brief conversations at the first tee or elsewhere on the course. He had a great smile and was always kind and polite toward everyone. I am glad to have met him and I am pleased that he was able to spend so many wonderful days at the Club during his retirement years.
Dear Sarah and all of The Honourable Mr. Mel Shannon’ s family.
We were so saddened to hear of our dear friend Mel’s passing, he was a kind and lovely gentleman whom will always have a special place in our hearts. Sincere condolences.
Repose toi, Cher ami!
John and Dolorèse Carruthers
My sincere condolences to Mel’s family. I knew him for many years through our association with the Glencoe Club. He was a spirited, determined, and accomplished athlete, and a true gentleman, as well as a gentle man. It was great to see him a few weeks ago when the new fitness area of the club was opened. He looked great and greeted me, and everyone he encountered with his warm and friendly smile, and his enthusiasm for the latest improvement to the Club of which he was so fond and to which he made such an outstanding contribution over the years. A life well lived but he will be greatly missed by family and friends.
