Obituary of Frances Marguerite BLACKWOOD

July 16, 1915 – Weyburn, Saskatchewan May 10, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta Frances Marguerite Blackwood (nee Cameron), beloved wife of Claude Haidon Blackwood (previously deceased November 2001), passed away peacefully surrounded by family on May 10, 2016 at the age of 100 ¾ years. Fran was born in Weyburn, SK and pursued her nurse’s training at Vancouver General Hospital (Class of ’36). She married her persistent suitor, Claude Blackwood, in July 1941, whereupon they began to create their family, starting with three spectacular daughters, Claudia Anne Blackwood, Susan Marguerite James (John James) and Heather Jean Jahrig (Danny Jahrig). Continuing the legacy, she is survived and lovingly remembered by her four grandchildren, Shaun James, Michelle Steele (nee James), Katelyn Owumi (nee Jahrig), and Missy Jahrig. In addition, she was thrilled to be a great-grandmother (G.G.) to Keenan and Cameron James, Ryan John (R.J.), Nathan and Ruby Frances Steele; and she would have been delighted with the birth of her sixth great-grandchild, Caleb Joshua Owumi, whose arrival is expected this July. Fran grew up in Shaunavon, SK, the eldest of four siblings. She has been predeceased by her brothers Paul and Grant Cameron and is treasured by her surviving sister Corinne (Hotsy) Watkins of Grass Valley, CA. Fran also leaves behind her much-loved nieces and nephews. Fran was highly committed to her church, her work at Foothills Hospital and her many friends. She especially valued her forty-plus year relationship with a dynamic group of men and women known as “The Circle”, as well as her precious, honourary daughter, Shelagh Fleming. To pay tribute to Fran’s immense affection for her family, a private celebration of life BBQ was held in her honour, filled with tears, laughter and shared stories. The celebration included four playful dogs who helped to create the chaos she would have loved. Fran’s family is pleased that she has gone home, having lived an amazingly full life. As she requested, she has been reunited with Claude in the Mausoleum at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Colonel Belcher Carewest Facility (Churchill Unit) for their unwavering support and gentle care. Condolences may be forwarded through .
