Obituary of Lillian Cecilia DOCKERY

December 14, 1928 – Assiniboia, Saskatchewan April 25, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta It is with deep sadness that we announce Lillian (Lil) Cecilia Dockery of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2016 at the age of 87 years. Born Lily Sather, shortly after her family arrived in Canada from Norway, she was the fourth child and first Canadian born to her family. The family moved to Crooked River where Lil attended school, and later to Birch Hills where she finished high school. Lil then attended Normal School in Saskatchewan where she earned her teacher’s certificate. Lil loved teaching from an early age, often helping fellow students with their maths and sciences. By all accounts, she was considered an excellent teacher and well-liked by her students. Lil moved to Alberta to continue teaching and met her soul mate, Jim Dockery, whom she married in 1958. Jim’s career as a petroleum engineer led him to work and live overseas in exotic locations including Iran, Libya, and Pakistan. With each of these moves, Lil would ensure everything with the children and the move were taken care of, while Jim went ahead to start work. Lil had great style and an eye for fashion. She enjoyed singing, dancing, curling, and playing bridge. She loved to go dancing on Friday nights with Jim at Calgary’s 400 Club, and while living in Libya they were avid members of a square dancing group. Throughout her life, Lil indulged her passion for crossword and logic puzzles, and in the last years, even Suduko as a way to stay sharp. Lil is described by family and friends as loving, caring, gentle, good humoured, intelligent, sharp‑witted, social, attractive, adventurous, stylish, tolerant, and faith‑filled. She was known to be a great teacher, cook, baker, and seamstress. Lil will be dearly missed by her children, Kathleen (Greg), Michael (Sheila), Patricia, Maureen (Gary), and Sean (Candi); her grandchildren, Laura (Jason), Justin, Brendan, Evan, Brooklyn, Danika, and Owen; her brothers, Lloyd Sather (Barb) and Eugene Sather (Fern); and many nieces, nephews, great‑nieces and great‑nephews. Lil was predeceased by her husband of 56 years Jim, her parents, Lars and Brynhild Sather, her sister, Klara Kinch, and her brothers, Palmer and Barney Sather. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, May 20, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
