Obituary of Lillian Dorothy SELLICK
January 4, 1927 – Winnipeg, Manitoba – May 3, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta
Lillian passed away May 3, 2016 at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre with her family at her side. Lillian was born January, 4, 1927 in Winnipeg, Manitoba to loving parents Robert and Olive (Muth) Wilwand. Being one of the younger ones in a large family Lillian has fond memories of babysitting her older brothers children. One of her first job was working as an usherette and cashier for Famous Players. It was at work one day in May 1944 that she would meet the love of her life a dashing young naval officer Stanley Robert Sellick. Lillian and Stanley were married July 15, 1944 and enjoyed nearly 69 years together before Stanley passed away in May 2013 at the age of 92. After the war Lillian and Stanley resided in Winnipeg, where their family was born – Russell 1946, Bonnie 1948, Jim 1949, Marshall 1952, and Cameron 1955. As Stanley was working for Commercial Union Insurance the family moved around quite a bit until a transfer to Calgary in 1960 would become their permanent home. As the family grew Lillian took a part time job at Sears and they purchased a trailer and rented a lot at Green Acres Trailer Park, on Pine Lake where the would enjoy summers for over 30 years. It was during those summers at Pine Lake that Lillian met 3 ladies that loved to play bridge as much as she did and it became an annual event where they would spend a week together without their families, playing bridge for an entire week. They did this for over 30 years and had lots of happy memories. During these same years sons Cameron and Marshall would purchase a corner grocery store (Martin’s Grocery) where Lillian worked for many years. In 1982 the store was sold and Lillian soon went to work part time for the Calgary Board of Education as a lunch room supervisor which she enjoyed very much for nearly 13 years until retirement. Lillian and Stanley were both avid crib players at the Royal Canadian Legion #264. They had a lot of fun travelling around to various Legions and the good fortune to play in the provincial championships many times. Lillian also made some wonderful friends at the the Banff Trail Crib Club and enjoyed playing crib with them for many years until her passing. Lillian loved to bake and every year at Christmas we all looked forward to our package of home baked goodies. Lillian was very proud of her family and loved them very much. She was also a loving second Mom and Grandma to many others who will also miss her dearly. Lillian leaves to mourn her children – Russell (Carol) Sellick , Bonnie (Norman) New, Jim (Vikki) Sellick, Marshall (Marguerite) Sellick, daughter-in-law Joan Sellick; eight grandchildren – Tara (Brian) Kuervers, Kevin (Edie) Sellick, Jeffrey Sellick, Heather New (Errin), Tracy New (Luke), Jamie Sellick, Phoenix (Mike) Lyon, Amber (Michael) Brown; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters – Pearl Corrigan and Joyce Webber of Winnipeg and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
