Obituary of Clara MERCER

MERCER, Clara August 7, 1921 – Claresholm, AB March 27, 2016 – Calgary, AB On Easter Sunday, Clara Margaret Mercer (née Paulson), aged 94, passed away in Calgary. Clare was born in Claresholm on August 7, 1921 to Halbert and Helene Paulson. She grew up in Claresholm and moved to Calgary in her early teens where she attended Western Canada High School. In 1948 she married Edwin “Ted” Robertson. They were together until Ted’s death in 1964. Clare remarried in 1970 to Rev. Nelson Mercer and immediately inherited the very public role of minister’s wife, which she handled with poise, patience, and charm. She also inherited the five Mercer children as well as a growing flock of grandchildren, a role she filled with grace and good humour long after Nelson’s death in 1991. She maintained her home as a warm and welcoming place for visiting children and grandchildren, who will miss her dearly. In recent years, in declining health due to vascular dementia, Clare moved into an extended care home. She is survived by stepchildren Joyce (Roy), Bob (Joyce), John (Irene), and Harry (Janice) as well as their children and grandchildren. Clare is predeceased by her parents, siblings Mabel, Hanna and Harold and stepdaughter Joan. At Clare’s request, no funeral service will be held.
