Obituary of Peter Pietro Attilio Giuseppe

1931 – 2016 Peter beloved husband of Betty passed away in Calgary, in the constant company of his loving family at the age of 85 years on Palm Sunday, March 20, 2016. Peter was born in Mirano, Venezia, Italy on February 17, 1931 to Felice and Gina. He studied at the University of Milan, earning his Doctorate Degree in Geology in 1957. Upon graduation, he married Luisa Napoli and took his first job as a geologist with Yaciemientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos in La Paz and as a guest lecturer at the University of La Paz. Their son Mauro and daughter Milena were born in La Paz and the family immigrated to Calgary in 1966, where he began his career with Canada Cities Service mentored by Bill Mooney, one of the original “Blue-eyed Sheiks”. His daughter Monica was born in Calgary. Peter was asked to lead Frontier and later Western Exploration activity, culminating in the role of overall Manager of Exploration for Canadian Occidental (Nexen). Peter was especially proud of the many great friendships he built and the outstanding professionals he had the opportunity to work with, learn from and mentor. Upon retirement, he joined Advantage Tech where he focused on outplacement counselling and took great pride and joy in helping people transition their careers in times of turmoil. After the death of Luisa in 1984, he married Albertina (Betty) Sivieri in September 1986. She was his devoted confidant and constant companion to the last. They enjoyed their special family gatherings, travelling the world, and becoming Grandparents to Michael, Marcus, Morgan, Julian and Jordan. Peter played everything from popular to classical piano by ear, and had a talent for acting, drawing, painting, and cabinetry, all self-taught. In 2005, Nonno Peter fell ill with pancreatitis. Betty stood by his side throughout the year-long hospitalization, urging and nursing him back to health. He spent the next ten years enjoying life, cheering for the Calgary Flames and Stampeders while undergoing dialysis three times a week. Peter will be missed by his loving family; his wife Albertina “Betty”, his son Mauro (Brenda), and his daughters, Milena and Monica (Sheldon); his grandchildren Michael, Marcus, Morgan, Julian and Jordan; his brother Giovanni “Gian”, his sister Maria “Mariuccia” Scalvenzi and her children Federica and Jacopo; and his nieces and nephews Edoardo, Francesco, Tito, Tobia, Paola and Marco. Peter is predeceased by his parents Felice (Gina) Meneghetti and brother Giuseppe “Chicco” (Gio). Peter will be forever remembered for his intelligence, charisma, irreverent sense of humour and undying love for his family. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to all the caring and compassionate friends, doctors, nurses and staff of the Foothills Hospital and especially Unit 37, ICU and the South Calgary Health Centre Dialysis Teams.
