Obituary of Donald Wayne HUGHES

September 13, 1956 – North Bay, Ontario March 18, 2016 – Calgary, Alberta Don Hughes, beloved husband of Pat Burke-Hughes of Calgary, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016, in his 60th year. Besides his loving wife, Pat, Don is survived by daughter Bess (Tyler); son Sam; sisters, Susan (Mark) and Janet (Michael); brother Tom (Claudia); several nieces, nephews and cousins, in particular, Damaris and Mary Lou. Don was predeceased by his brother, Robert and parents, Fred and Ivy. Don spent his formative years growing up in Copper Cliff, Ontario, with many happy hours shoveling snow in the winter or wondering what to do in the hot summers. After graduating high school and exploring career options, Don ended up with an instrumentation diploma and sought his fortune in the wild west of the early eighties. Settling in Calgary, Don made a career in the oil and gas industry working for Gulf, Macdonald Engineering, Colt and WorleyParsons amongst others. Don was proud of his job and thorough in his work; and often boasted about how many vendor lunches he could amass in any given year. Don’s greatest achievement by far was his family, and the love he shared with Pat, Bess, Sam, granddaughter-dog Lucy and, of course, his beloved dog, Sadie, who was never far from his side. Pat and Don shared a very special love that you could feel when they were together and that love will last forever. Pat and Don acknowledge those very special friends who spent innumerable hours together. Don’s days were filled with joy because of the support of his friends. As Don battled pancreatic cancer, he inspired his friends, family and doctors with his courage, determination and positive outlook. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Drs. Scot Dowden, Chad Ball, Ritchie Sinha as well as the many nurses and staff of the Tom Baker Cancer Centre for the quality of care provided over the past two years. A Gathering will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street North) on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church (1917 – 19th Avenue N.W.) on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through .
