His loving wife Yvette passed away shortly after on Friday, March 4, 2016 at the age of 94 years. They were raised on nearby farms in Saskatchewan before and during the Great Depression. As WWII began, they both moved to Manitoba, where Elroy served in the Royal Canadian Air Force stationed in Rivers and Yvette worked as a Nursing Aid in Winnipeg. They began their 72 year marriage in Winnipeg on June 14, 1943. After the war, they moved – first, briefly to Calgary, and then to Vulcan where they stayed for 8 years before returning permanently to Calgary. Elroy began working as an electrician and retired as an electrical inspector with the City of Calgary after a career of 25 years. Yvette was primarily a homemaker but enjoyed working with the Hudson’s Bay, Elections Canada, and especially as a pari-mutuel clerk with Calgary Stampede Racing. Yvette and Elroy were active members of St. Michael Parish. Yvette was a member of the Catholic Women’s League and Elroy was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Elroy had been quite active in fastball and later in slo-pitch. He pitched a no-hitter in a provincial play-off fastball game in the ‘50’s, and was recognized as the oldest member of the Calgary Senior Men’s Softball 55+ league in 1998. Both Yvette and Elroy curled together extensively from 1950 – 1960. Later, Elroy was a member of the Alberta team that won the Canadian Legion Men’s Curling Championship in the ‘70’s, and an active member of the Calgary Curling Club for many years. Yvette loved all card games and belonged to several bridge clubs. She had a special passion for creative artistic pursuits such as oil and water color painting and was a prolific gardener. They travelled often, and spent many winter months as snow birds in the U.S.A. Yvette and Elroy are survived by their four children: Doug (Jane), their children Nathan (Danielle), Matthew (Ashley); Rick (Lynn) of Cochrane, their children Sean (Suzanne), Danny, Jamie (Katie); Myrna Brownlie (Paul) of Windsor, ON, their children Tanya Green (Joel) of Cochrane, Jason of Windsor; and Mark of Crawford Bay, BC; as well as six great-grandchildren Jazmyn and Kole, Alexandra and William, Mason and Bryson.
