Obituary of Katheran Mary DRISCOLL

May 7, 1920 – Calgary, Alberta December 20, 2015 – Cochrane, Alberta Kay passed away on December 20, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard Driscoll; her mother, Hazel Davis Patton; her father, Frank Patton; and her sister, Anna MacGregor. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda; her brother Frank Patton (Wendy); and nephews Ian, John and Andy. Kay’s mother, Hazel Davis, came to Alberta with her parents from Ohio in 1900 to homestead and Kay’s father, Frank Patton, came with his parents from Iowa in 1902, also to homestead. Kay’s first years began at the family farm of her grandparents, Dan and Burd Patton, near Midnapore. With the help of their sons, Frank, Joe and Clint, the Patton family broke and farmed approximately three sections of land between Midnapore and Red Deer Lake. Kay’s family later moved from the farm to a house in Calgary on Twelfth Avenue where Hazel took in boarders and Frank opened a service station and garage on Fourth Avenue. During the Second World War, Kay’s husband, Leonard Driscoll, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, became a pilot instructor and died tragically in a training accident while flying with the British Commonwealth Air Training Program. This was the generation that stepped forward, voluntarily, to preserve our democracy and liberty. While caring for both her aging parents and raising her daughter, Kay worked as a secretary for the Department of Veterans Affairs and later in the oil and gas industry. Throughout her life Kay studied art, taking courses at university and workshops; she was passionate about painting en plein air; she was a long-time member of the Cochrane Art Club. Kay enjoyed bridge and played with the same group of friends for over 50 years. She loved nature and the outdoors and was always ready for a hike in the mountains. Weekends and holidays were spent at the rustic little cabin on the banks of the Ghost River that Kay and her sister owned for many years. Kay looked at life with wit, humour and optimism. She leaves a legacy of strength, courage, love and compassion. Many thanks to the dedicated staff at the Cochrane Bethany. Thanks to Barb the bridge lady and the bridge buddies for their camaraderie. Thank you to special friends, Sarah and Marie-Linda for their thoughtfulness and kindness. It was Kay’s wish that no service be held and that those who knew her take time to visit an elderly or sick friend. Condolences may be forwarded through . In living memory of Kay Driscoll, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Cochrane, 369 RAILWAY STREET, COCHRANE.
