Obituary of Kenneth Duncan BUTTERWORTH
November 21, 1930 – Edmonton, Alberta
August 8, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta
Kenneth beloved husband of Jeanne Butterworth (nee Delbarre) of Calgary, passed away peacefully at Carewest Sarcee Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the age of 84 years.
Ken was born and raised in Edmonton to Clifford Butterworth from England and Mary Butterworth (nee Duncan) from Scotland. He spent many summers in the outdoors on a farm developing his love for the outdoors.
Ken received a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Alberta in 1951 and subsequently his Chartered Accountant professional certification in 1954. He spent most of his working years at Cana Construction Ltd. in Calgary.
He met Jeanne while they worked at the Income Tax Office in Edmonton and they were married in 1956 and moved to Calgary in 1961.
Ken loved the mountains hiking and camping. An outdoor enthusiast, he was very active in the Canada Youth Hostel organization and his crowning achievement was riding his bicycle from Edmonton to Jasper and on to Calgary before he was married.
He played many sports: hockey in school, badminton, tennis, racquetball golf and curling. He continued to curl and golf well into his seventies. He even took up downhill skiing in his fifties.
Ken and Jeanne camped for all their married life across Canada through to the US and were involved with RV clubs, lastly with the Rain and Shine RV club.
Ken enjoyed our many trips especially the two he had with Jeanne in Europe and also went on five cruises.
His last distant travels six years ago were, for four years in a row, to Hawaii in the winter.
For ten years he also travelled by helicopter to stay at the cabins and hike around the area of Mount Assiniboine.
Ken was very loyal to Calgary’s professional sports teams: the Calgary Flames and Stampeders. He held seasons tickets to the Calgary Stampeders for many seasons.
He tirelessly volunteered his services as an accountant for the local community association, The Nickelodeon Folk Club, Dots and Dashers Square Dance group and the Rain or Shine RV Club.
His last and he would probably say his most enjoyable volunteering, was with the Calgary Food bank.
One of his proudest events was the opening of a school in Edmonton, named after his mother, Mary Butterworth School. In Edmonton, Mary Butterworth campaigned against school district rulings that forced teachers to stop work upon getting married and served for 12 years on the Edmonton Public School Board.
Even as his health and stamina was slowing he looked forward to his weekly gathering with a group of friends for breakfast enjoying the coffee and good conversation or a good game of cribbage.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Jeanne Butterworth, his son Ian (b. 1962), Daughter-In-Law Marja Butterworth (nee Baron), grandson Surya (b. 1993), and grand-daughters Savitri (b. 1995), Sumati (b. 1997) and Janaki (b. 1999) and his son Gregory (b. 1965), his Daughter-In-Law Judy Butterworth (nee McClelland) and grandson Connor (b. 2002).
