Obituary of A. Douglas BROWN

Doug’s parents, Archibald and Elsie, emigrated to Canada from Scotland and Wales after World War 1. Doug was born in Winnipeg, MB in 1919, and was followed by his brother Athole in 1920. The boys were members of the Boy Scouts which engendered a life long love of the outdoors. In his day, Doug sailed, curled, canoed, and was very passionate about duck hunting in the Manitoba marshes near Lake Winnipeg, though he spent more time enjoying the outdoors and camping than in actually hunting or fishing. His family certainly didn’t enjoy many roast duck nor freshly caught fish dinners! Doug became an accountant and articled with Price Waterhouse to become a Chartered Accountant. He also worked at J.M. Schneider and Cran Mowatt and Drever, before joining Revenue Canada as a tax auditor. He really loved his career, but when he met Dorothy Hay on Christmas Eve in 1942, she became his first love. They were married in September of 1943, and had four children: son Douglas, and daughters Karen, Sandra and Linda. Dorothy’s family were mostly in Winnipeg, so with many aunts, uncles and cousins in close proximity, family get-togethers were fun. Doug again got involved in Boy Scouts, as a Scout leader and rose to become the District Commissioner of Scouting in Winnipeg. He was very proud of his son, Douglas, who achieved the hard-won status of Queen’s Scout. In 1962, Revenue Canada transferred Doug and family to Calgary, where he worked in the Major File Division. Later he worked for Clarkson Gordon and in the 1970’s he and Dorothy started their own business, named T1 Consultants. He continued to work into his 95th year, one advantage of being the “Boss”. His Scottish heritage was very important to him, although he really loved Calgary and Alberta’s foothills, mountains and forests. He thought Scotland would be similar, though to his sorrow he never travelled to his family’s birthplace. He was a staunch supporter of Duck’s Unlimited and the Salvation Army, as he felt both organizations accomplished wonderful things for nature and society. Doug and Dorothy spent 68 years together, until her death in 2012. She was “his angel” and he felt she was always with him. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Athole; sisters and brothers-in-law Murray, Renee, Gladys, Stewart, and George. Doug is survived by his sisters-in-law Betty, Ruth, and Doree; and brother-in-law Art. He will be sadly missed by his four children Douglas, Karen, Sandra and Linda; two sons-in-law Dale and Mick; five grandchildren Carmen (Glenn), Megan (Chris), Jennifer, Kristel (Warren), and Drew; four great-grandchildren Robin, Amanda, Malcolm and William; several nieces and nephews; along with many long-time friends, co-workers, and clients. Doug loved his work, politics, hockey and his family and friends. I know we will all miss him sorely. I think when we get to Heaven we will hear him exclaim: “WELL, I’VE GOT NEWS FOR EVERYBODY” and he will want to know if you noticed the P.M.’s latest wig!!! Thanks to all his friends and ‘extended family’ for being there for Doug over the years, and for your love, kindness, caring and prayers for him and for his family. A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to Duck’s Unlimited, the Salvation Army, or the charity of your choice. And per Doug’s good advice “don’t forget to get a receipt!” In living memory of Doug Brown, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W.
