Obituary of Constance Grace Ruth McGill

November 14, 1921 – Blucher, Saskatchewan May 13, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta Ruth, beloved Mother of son Brian Evans and wife Janice, of Calgary; daughter Kathryn “Kathy” Ellis, husband Brad of Georgetown, Ontario; passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. Adored Grandma to Ted, Jennifer, Wade; Shannon, Grant. Great Grandma to Abby, Calder, Joel, Rayna, Maren, Hadden, Rafael and Victor. Predeceased by husbands Ted Evans, Jim McGill, brother Laurence Collins, sister Dorothy Long, mother A. H “Ruth” Collins, father Alan Collins and Grandparents, Ruth Howse , Matthew Howse and her Aunt, Connie Fraser. After her mother’s death, Ruth; 14 months was raised with her siblings in Melfort, Saskatchewan by her grandparents, Ruth and Matthew Howse and beloved Aunt Connie Fraser. Ruth moved to Winnipeg as a young women and trained to become a registered nurse at St. Boniface Hospital. There she met and married Ted Evans and moved to Calgary to raise their two children. She took the raising of her children very seriously and always lovingly encouraged them to not be afraid to go forward independently into their future. She taught by example kindness and thoughtfulness towards others and always to practice common sense. When her chicks left the nest Ruth went back to nursing and subsequently was the administrator at George Boyack Nursing Home for many years. Ruth moved to Saanichton, B.C. in the late 70’s with her husband Jim McGill and they enjoyed gardening, hiking, and the exploring of the Islands. She also traveled with Kathy to Eastern Canada and the United States, Florida, Britain and Europe. Jim and Ruth moved back to Calgary in the late 1990’s, enjoying being closer to Brian, Jan and family. Upon Jim’s passing she returned to the family’s beloved “Camp”, that she had helped to build for many happy summers. She always had a keen interest in the news – politics, local and federal, always a great subject for discussion. Her family also enjoyed Ruth’s keen wit. Ruth enjoyed her Grandchildren beyond measure and they found her to be a perfect sounding board for all of their fears and goals. They always knew that she would listen, advise wisely and offer total support. Happiness to Ruth was family time, every great grand child’s birth gave her a new lease on life. In the midst of chaotic family celebrations she would sit smiling and proud. Ruth had many health challenges and recovered with determination and a strong will( especially if there was an upcoming wedding of a Grandchild to attend!) Her spirit, determination and kindness has greatly affected all her family and will live on in us all. The family would like to thank the loving care of the staff at Walden Heights Seniors Community and at South Health Campus. A private family celebration of life will be held.
