Obituary of William NICKERSON

February, 15, 1959 – St. John’s, NL March, 21, 2015 – Calgary, AB Bill, beloved husband of Peggy Nickerson (Roche), passed peacefully away on March 21, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Bill was Peggy’s best friend and loving husband for 31 years and he will be loved always. He was the proud father of daughter Katherine Bibby (Chris), son Colin and daughter Kinsey. He was also the very proud grandfather of grandson William (Will) Bibby. He was the beloved younger brother of Angeline Anstey, Bruce Nickerson (Linda), Sarah Gates (Merlin), Barbara Nickerson and Susan Wilton (Derek). He will be deeply missed by his sister-in-laws Catherine Nurse (Robert), Dianne Stanford (Craig), Geraldine Griffin (Ross), and Jennifer Roche as well as brother-in-laws Michael and John Roche. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. Bill was predeceased by his father Donald Earl Nickerson, his mother Ivis Olwen Nickerson (Bell), his father and mother-in-law Gerald and Catherine Roche (Quigley), as well as dear brother-in-law Alfred Anstey. Bill was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He moved to Calgary with his family in 1995 to pursue his career in geophysics. He worked at PanCanadian and then Encana before starting his own consultancy, Global Geosolutions. He received a B.Sc. and Ph.D. from Memorial University of Newfoundland and an M.Sc from the University of British Columbia. He was an active volunteer in the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysics (CSEG). He had a deep commitment to continuing education. He was a patient and gifted teacher. Bill received the CSEG’s Meritorious Service Award in 2005 for significant contributions to education in geophysics. He was the founder and driving force behind the CSEG’s Doodle Train continuing education week. The CSEG has set up the “Bill Nickerson Education Award” to be awarded annually. Bill enjoyed being outdoors: golfing, camping, running, cross country skiing or just walking his dog around the block. He loved travelling, playing guitar, listening to live music and having a drink with his friends. He was happiest, however, when he was at home surrounded by his family sharing a meal and laughing and talking with his children. He had a great capacity for joy and believed in living life to the fullest in every moment. The family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff of Unit 47 at the Tom Baker Cancer Center, and to thank Dr. Jose Monzon and Dr. J. P. Voroney. Your care and kindness will be always remembered. Those wishing to may make a donation in Bill’s name to the Tom Baker Cancer Center in Calgary, Alberta. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY(2720 Centre Street North), on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Sheraton Four Points(8220 Bowridge Crescent NW). Everyone welcome.
