Obituary of Katherine Grace SQUANCE
1923 – 2015
Katherine passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the age of 91.
She was born in Medicine Hat to her loving parents Grace and John Squance. She was predeceased by her husband Lem Barnes, and will be remembered fondly by his children and their families. Katherine led a full life. As a young independent woman she lived in Calgary and worked in the banking industry and then as an administrative assistant for Burns and Dutton.
Katherine was an avid reader and had a lifelong enthusiasm for history. She pursued many interests, including pottery, china painting, fashion and attending concerts and the ballet. With her husband Lem she shared a passion for golf, the game of bridge and travelling. They spent winters in Victoria before eventually moving there to fully appreciate all the city had to offer. Afternoon tea, beautiful gardens, ocean views and dinners out together brought joy to their lives.
As health issues became a concern, they returned to Calgary to be closer to family. Katherine’s last home was on Primrose at Cedars Villa. The family is grateful to all of the Primrose staff for their care, compassion and kindness. A private family service will be held at a later date. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
In living memory of Katherine Squance, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Calgary, AB, T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.
