Obituary of June Hazel DICKSON

May 4, 1928 – January 2, 2015 In the company of her four children, June Dickson passed away on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 86 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband, Arch Dickson, in 2010. June provided a strong moral compass for her children Peter (Chris), Margaret, Myrla Bulman (Steve) and Barb Homer (Don) and was a devoted grandmother to Stephanie and Shauna Bulman, and Jeffrey, Amy and Michael Homer. Predeceased by sisters Lorraine Evans, Elizabeth Wambolt, and her brother-in-law Alan Drysdale, June is survived by her sister Myrla Drysdale, brothers-in-law George Evans and Phil Wambolt, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. June was the eldest of four daughters born to Margaret and Ernest McCully in Nova Scotia. With her sisters, she enjoyed a happy childhood in Port Hawkesbury on Cape Breton Island. At 16, June left the island to pursue bookkeeping studies at Acadia University. June and Arch met at a dance in Truro, NS and were married in Alberta in 1949 after he convinced her to join him in making a life in the West. They always worked together, first on the ranches of family and friends, and eventually in their own automotive business after settling in Calgary. Always a caregiver, family and friends were central to June’s life as exemplified by her open door hospitality, with a welcoming guestroom and several kinds of pie always on offer. Her generous spirit touched those near and far, from St. Andrew’s United Church, to her local neighbourhood and the community at large. In recent months, these kindnesses were echoed back with treats and support from many people and caregivers, in particular her cousin Christine (Rafuse) Brown. Donations to honour June’s 49-year commitment to Meals on Wheels (5759 80 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB T2C 4S6) and time spent preparing breakfasts for Inn from the Cold (110-11 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0X5) may be made if desired. A memorial service will be held at Southwood United Church (10690 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
