Obituary of Alice Margaret HAINES

April 8, 1919 – Tugaske, Saskatchewan December 3, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta Alice Haines, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away peacefully with family at her side on Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the age of 95 years. Alice was the middle of 7 children born to Gordon and Clara Marshall. Alice grew up on the Saskatchewan prairies going to school and helping with the daily chores on the family farm. In the early 30s during the Great Depression the Marshall’s packed up all of their household belongings and moved the family up north to a farm near Weirdale, Saskatchewan. Playing soft ball for the Foxford ladies team she met Robert (Bob) Haines from Shipman who provided transportation to the team in his old car. It was love at first sight and they married in 1940. Bob being in the RCAF, they moved together to a few postings throughout Canada and finally winding up in Calgary in 1943. There Bob and Alice built three homes and raised three children. As a full time homemaker and mother, Alice volunteered with the Foothills Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and worked part time for the City of Calgary Elections Office. In addition to her hobbies of knitting, crocheting, sewing and needlepoint Alice loved to cook and have family and friends over for a good meal. You never left the Haines house hungry. She was an avid Bridge, Cribbage and Skip-Bo player. She was always ready for happy hour and a rip roaring game of “99”. Alice was an impeccable house keeper and loved caring for her vegetable and flower gardens as her house was always in top shape and in full bloom during the summer months. She loved to socialize with friends over coffee and making donuts in the backyard with neighbors on the camp stove. Alice and Bob also loved to explore the continent in their travel trailer and, in their retirement years during the coldest of the Canadian winter months were regular residents of Palm Springs, California. They also saw many parts of the world on Cruise Ships and air trips they had taken. Alice is survived by her three children, Gordon Haines (Gail Hood), Glenda Wilson (Rob), and Larry Haines (Joan). Her grandchildren, Everett Wilson, Jennifer Haines, Johnathon Haines; and great-grandchildren, Kylie Houston and Robert Houston. She is also survived by her younger sister Kathryn Tomlinson of Regina, Saskatchewan and sister-in-law Doris Marshall of Calgary as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Robert Haines; sisters, Beatrice Garrison, Doris Moore, and Eunice Smith; and brothers, Jack Marshall and Bob Marshall. Alice’s Family would like to thank the management and staff of Extendicare Cedars Villa Maple Unit, and Home Instead Seniors Care for all of the excellent care that she received.
