Obituary of Margaret Sommerville Smart Johnstone CHORNY
“Johnnie” to all her family and friends, died peacefully at the Didsbury Long Term Care Unit, October 15. Born in Scotland, she first came to Canada with her family in the 1920’s as a child, returning to Scotland in the mid-thirties, where she completed her schooling.
Early in the Second World War, she operated threading machines, turning out parts for Rolls-Royce aero engines, until her acceptance into Nursing School. While working as a nurse, she met a Canadian Airman, Merron Chorny, whom she married in 1945, coming back to Canada in 1946.
Johnnie became an active participant in every community in which she lived, assertive in many associations supporting education, public health and public governance. Her focus in each endeavour she undertook was to improve the lives of women and children. She was proud to have been recognized for her participation with a Provincial Achievement Award for Excellence, and with the Queen Elizabeth Silver Anniversary Medal.
Johnnie was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Merron; and is survived by her treasured granddaughter Nicole; her three children, John (Marlene), Jo-Anne (Gene), and Joyce (Christopher).
Our family would like to thank the staff of the Didsbury Long Term Care Unit for their excellent and compassionate care for our Mother. Fulfilling her request, private placement of her cremains will take place according to her wishes. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
