The members of the Calgary Police Veterans Association extend their sincere sympathy to all the Tarves family on the recent passing of Laurie Tarves. He was a long serving and highly regarded member of the Calgary Police Service and many in our Veterans Association will have their special memories of their close association with him. May your own happy memories of him be a comfort to you at this time.
My first introduction to Staff/Sgt Tarves was as a young Calgary Police Service recruit in 1976, newly assigned to his watch at the headquarters building on 7 Ave. Although not tall in stature he was a man who commanded respect and stressed upon me the pride, integrity and professionalism of the Calgary Police Service, he was a gentleman. My condolences on your family loss.
Dear Tracy and Family:
My sincere condolences on the passing of your Father, Laurie. I have intersected with your family in many ways: as a member of the Calgary Police Service with Laurie; through Scouting with your mother, and you Tracy through the Zoo. And of course we all lived in Ramsay. I did not know Laurie well in the Police Service, but knew he was an honorable man who I respected. Laurie and all have served the City of Calgary well and proudly.
Big hugs Tracy;
Bonnie Rothwell
I am deeply saddened to hear of your dad’s passing. In late 1971, I had the privilege of being assigned to the Traffic Section within the Calgary Police Service and thus worked for then Staff Sergeant Tarves. He was always a gentleman and he treated everyone fairly no matter their seniority. He did have a temper and I recall a day when a particularly obnoxious individual continually pushed the limits to the point where S/Sgt. Tarves leapt the counter (I am sure without even touching it) and arrested the man. Through the years, many good laughs were had around that story. He truly served the citizens of Calgary well throughout his career and was a strong role model for rookies such as I. Please accept my condolences.
Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss. I worked for Laura many years ago with the Calgary Police Service. He was a fine gentleman who made a positive mark on the lives of those with whom he worked.
The Tarves & Buchanan boys grew up together during the Dirty Thirties & Second World War on the North Hill of Calgary with all 7 of them serving in the RCNVR. Members of both families played football locally and several of them with the Stampeders. Whilst Laurie served with the Calgary Police many years Bill Buchanan served with the RCMP for 34 years. Laurie and his brother Gordon were members of the Calgary Navy Veterans Association for many years and attended various functions with their wives Dallas & Ethel. They will all be sadly missed by their Shipmates at the Corvetter Club. God Bless & Fair Winds & Following Seas. Jean & Bill Buchanan
