Obituary of Catherine Anne SHERWOOD (nee Moir)

March 27, 1944 - Stratford,Ontario
November 4, 2019 - Calgary, Alberta

Catherine Sherwood, beloved wife of Louis Carl Sherwood passed away on Monday, November 4, 2019 at the age of 75 years.

Catherine was born in Stratford, ON, on March 27, 1944 to Andrew Charles Moir and Catherine M. Moir (nee Bailey).  Shortly after her birth, her mother passed away.  She spent the first four years of her life in Saint Marys, ON raised by her father, her paternal grandparents, and her aunt. After her father remarried in 1948, Catherine moved to Ottawa, ON where she attended Alta Vista Elementary School with her younger siblings Barbara and Richard. Catherine graduated from Ridgemont High School and began her career working for Canada Post. She then moved to Southern Ontario to work in a law firm she enjoyed. She later worked at a high school in the Kitchener and Waterloo area where she especially enjoyed her time helping high school students in the library.

Catherine married Carl Sherwood in 1969. They both loved animals. They had three dogs, a cat, and a horse. Catherine loved riding her horse Friar after work and on weekends.  When friends were unable to ride their own horses, she would exercise theirs as well.  She volunteered at a local animal shelter, socializing puppies; as well, gardened, sewed, and read extensively. Catherine was involved in making crafts with her friends, and creating beautiful knitting, crocheting, and ceramics, which she was proud to give as gifts. She took music lessons as an adult to learn to play her baby grand piano and kept active by swimming, pole walking, biking, and horse back riding. She had a passion for classical music.  When she heard music with a good beat, she was the first one up on her feet and ready to dance. Hearing bagpipes moved her deeply.

Catherine and Carl retired to Vancouver Island, where they spent many happy days travelling the islands, walking the beaches, and making new friends. Catherine volunteered to look after the library for her local horticultural group. She often hopped the ferry and explored nearby islands on day trips. Before she was married, she travelled to England, Mexico, and the Caribbean. She and Carl cruised to Alaska.

Catherine is survived by her son Gregory Girard (Gina); and grandsons Jaeden and Avian, all from St. Lucia, W.I.; sister Barbara Schultz (Earl), Calgary, AB; nephew Steven Schultz (Carmen); great-niece Alina, Ottawa, ON; her brother Richard Moir (Freddie), Brantford, ON, her aunt Bernice Moir, her cousins Stephanie Forte, and Lea, as well as other cousins.  She is also survived by several nephews on her husband’s side of the family.  She will be missed by many friends in Comox and Courtenay, Vancouver Island. Catherine was predeceased by her loving husband Carl in 2013.

In the Spring Catherine’s ashes will be scattered on Vancouver Island with her husband Carl’s ashes. Friends and family will be notified in advance.

A tree will be planted in Calgary in living memory of Catherine Sherwood.
